Don’t Miss Your Property Tax Appeal Deadlinetle

by Jay A. Feller, CPA

Real estate taxes are one of the largest expense items for many of our clients. It is a volatile issue with reassessments and other changes. If you want to look into a potential reduction in your real estate tax, the deadline could be looming. There is especially potential for appeals on commercial properties. In Indiana, the 2010 appeal deadlines are as follows:

Marion County - November 30, 2010 or 45 days from tax bill
Vanderburgh County - December 20, 2010
Allen, Hamilton, Hancock, Howard and Johnson counties - 45 days from tax bill if no notice issued
Madison, Delaware and Henry counties - No deadline determined for 2010

We can recommend a property tax consulting firm that may be able to assist you with commercial real estate tax appeals of your most recent real estate tax bill. This firm is able to file a blanket appeal before the due date in order to follow up and perform some due diligence regarding any potential reduction in your current commercial real estate property tax assessment. They can also assist you in future property tax appeals if you decide to address this in the future. There could be opportunity to reduce taxes on property owned in other states as well.
